First-time mothers demand more information about life with the baby

In a survey conducted in Australia of 151 first-time mothers, 35% said that did not feel prepared for the physical demand that meant raising a baby and 20% said they were not prepared for the emotional experience.

86% of mothers sought information on child care and the experience of being a mother before giving birth. 69% obtained this information from the doctor and other health professionals and 55% confirmed attendance at prenatal courses.

The results of the survey suggest that despite receiving certain information this one is not enough.

One in four mothers would like to have learned more about breastfeeding and a similar percentage would have needed to be more informed about the baby's sleep patterns. Most of the mothers commented that the preparatory classes focused too much on labor and the same childbirth itself and very little on parenting and living with the baby.

The director of the study, Margaret Barnes, said in this regard that "it would be good to redirect education and services to help women and families 'think about the baby'. Understanding living with a baby, especially through other mothers, would help them in the transition. "

Right now the preparto classes of the movies come to my image and I only see women learning to breathe to give birth.

Luckily the current preparatory classes are more complete and depending on the professional who teaches them they can become sufficient and very complete or, unfortunately, unhelpful. To give a close example, the breastfeeding class they gave my wife was something like a They will explain it to you at the Hospital.

Barnes suggested to new mothers to look for courses or groups where meet with other women They already had some baby.

Personally it seems like a great idea. In Spain there are some breeding groups and many breastfeeding groups that you can go to after giving birth but also before. I even know that there are some Primary Care Centers in which breastfeeding consultants attend the preparatory classes together with the midwife.

It is a good resource to meet someone before giving birth that can be a support and a reference once you have given birth.
