He is afraid of the doctor, what to do

There are children who go to the doctor's office as if they were going to the slaughterhouse. Some parents make up tricks to take them deceived by the panic caused by that white-robed character with a strange gadget hanging around his neck.

With my oldest daughter I don't have to use any tricks because I enjoy it as much as a walk in the park, but there are children who really they are afraid to go to the doctor's office.

It is not necessary to fight against the child, nor to deceive him, nor to threaten him but to help him overcome his fear since he is one of the many that lurk in the universe of childhood fears. The same as the fear of separating from parents, of cutting their hair or of the darkness, does not have a logical explanation, but they feel it.

Mainly, you have to prepare the child for a visit to the doctor. It is not necessary to warn him with too much anticipation but it is well to announce the day before that tomorrow they will go to the doctor, not to surprise him with treason. A good suggestion is to discuss the subject with the child the previous days. Children's books, stories and games can be a great help.

Make it clear that mom or dad (or whoever) will accompany you at all times, that they will be there for whatever you need. Our attitude also influences, if we take it naturally, we will help our child also understand it that way, instead if we make a drama of the visit to the doctor with negative comments, the child also senses it.

In older children, who are already aware of what it is to be "sick" can be attacked by fear of disease, to have to operate them or give them injections and even in some cases they may feel guilty believing they have become ill because of something they have done wrong. In this case, parents should explain the situation with common sense and good judgment by speaking clearly so that they can understand it. Explain what the doctor will do to check it, what instruments you will use, etc.

If they are smaller we can take your favorite toy, a stuffed animal, your blanket, the pacifier or any object with which the child feels protected. Trying to distract the baby while they check it is a good maneuver, as long as we don't bother the doctor, just like taking him in the arms to comfort him once the check is over.
