Excess sugar and saturated fat in cereals

Breakfast as one of the most important meals of the day returns to our pages, this time to stop at one of the foods that usually contribute to a full and balanced breakfast: cereals.

It is not bad to take a look at the nutritional values of cereals, especially if they go to our children's breakfast on a daily basis. Because they are precisely children's cereals those who tend to sweeten more ...

Our partners of Straight to the palate They warn of an issue to consider: 9 out of 10 cereals have excessive amounts of sugar.

This conclusion has been reached after an analysis by the Facua consumer organization of a total of 155 varieties of cereals. High sugar levels in 134 of the products, excessive Saturated fats in 25 of them and also excessive levels of salt in 35 of the articles.

The table prepared by Facua It provides all the data in this regard to each brand of cereals. It is very complete (the 6 varieties of cereals that I have at home appear) and explicit, since in the case of the levels of sugars, fats, saturated fats and sodium, these will appear in red or orange if they are excessive, and in green if it is within the appropriate.

Those numbers in red indicate the same excesses found in the industrial bakery, of elements that it is convenient to reduce in the diets, since they favor obesity, hypertension or caries.

In any case, leaving a few cereals most of the prominence in the breakfast of the little ones that are in full growth, is not adequate. Breakfast must be varied, and include, apart from dairy products, natural fruits (pieces or juices).

Carbohydrates, apart from cereals, can also be provided by bread (better if not made of bread) or cookies, although these can also contain excess sugar or saturated fat. And always taking care of the inclusion of industrial pastries, the most harmful to health.

We will surely see in the analysis table how the cereals that our children take leave the limits. But it is not the same to take a bowl and a half of cereals, than to accompany the milk with a few cereals.

And so we will get a complete and healthy breakfast that helps the physical and intellectual performance of children.
