From urban to digital tribes: how do your children use the Internet?

Nickelodeon has recently commissioned a study that they have titled “Me, My Selfie & I” in which a thousand children between six and 11 years old participated. It was intended to understand how children's relationships with technology are, and how this influences their leisure.

It has been developed in four stages, and used techniques such as interviews with experts, online surveys among the target population, and “cluster analysis” to define the results

These results have served to identify four “digital tribes” according to the use of the Internet by children:

  • Playful Newbie (newbies). He emphasizes that they tend to have parental supervision, and seek innovative experiences and to share, they still prefer physical toys and the internet serves them to find imaginative content. They are 32 percent of the sample.

  • Digital Discoverer (digital discoverers) - 23 percent -, passionate about technology and also aspects of the 'physical world' such as sport. Creative and with a tendency to advance in the discovery of new games and toys.

  • Games master (players), as you can imagine, they usually take advantage of the internet to play online, and benefit from the relationships they get with this activity; the contents that star in his characters are his favorites ... 21 percent of British children between six and 11 are in this group.

  • Social sharers, they connect with the world through digital platforms and social networks, commercial messages go to the background because, above all, they are interested in social relations. They make up 24 percent of the boys and girls surveyed.

Do you think your children fit into any of these categories?
