New bank that will provide breast milk to all hospitals in Madrid

On May 7, a new breast milk bank will be inaugurated at the 12 de Octubre Hospital, the ALADINA Maternal Milk Bank - MGU that will provide breast milk to all hospitals in the Community of Madrid.

Yes, there is already a breast milk bank in that hospital. In fact, it was the first of the peninsula. This is an extension of the existing bank, which has been fully financed thanks to the generosity of a single donor, MGU, who has explicitly requested that his contribution be destined to the creation of a breast milk bank.

It will serve all Neonatology Units of public hospitals in Madrid and will cover the nutritional needs of all premature babies or sick newborns who cannot be breastfed by their own mothers.

The new bank distribute about 2,000 liters of breast milk per year to Madrid hospitals, compared to the 600 liters per year that it dispensed before this reform was carried out.

Breast milk is a medicine for premature babies and newborns with any disease. It provides protection against infections and promotes the development of the immune system. It has been shown to reduce the risk of developing neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NNS) three times, a very common disease in premature children, which is considered serious and has a mortality of 25%.

It's great news to know that thanks to a person full of generosity thousands of babies will benefit from breast milk when their mothers, for whatever circumstance, cannot.
