Child abuse causes problems in physical and mental health when children grow up

There is a causal relationship between 'non-sexual child abuse' (MINS) and a variety of mental disorders, drug use, suicide attempt, STDs and risky sexual behaviors.

This is the conclusion that the work reaches 'The Long-Term Health Consequences of Child Physical Abuse, Emotional Abuse, and Neglect: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis' - published in PLoS Med. -, which has been reviewed by doctors Cuesta Montañes (University of Córdoba / Argentina) and Juanes de Toledo (Primary Care Team Collado Villalba / Madrid).

This is a study that It aims to summarize the existing evidence on the relationship between physical abuse (physical abuse), emotional abuse and neglect, in childhood and its consequences on subsequent physical and mental health. RE. Norman and his collaborators (team that carried out the work) conducted a search in Medline, EMBASE and PsycINFO of cohort, cross-sectional and case-control studies published in indexed journals until June 26, 2012.

In the process they conducted a search on, which examined the association between the MINS and its health consequences.

This review is the first published quantifying the relationship between MINS and mental illness, behavioral disorders and somatic diseases.

And it is that the long-term effects of child sexual abuse are well known, but the consequences of the MINS on the health status of people are unknown.

Although the results of this meta-analysis should be interpreted with caution, given its limitations, Primary Care pediatricians have a very important responsibility to identify the abused child early, take care of your health, request help from child protection agencies and promote prevention, support and monitoring programs.

It is a problem that is undoubtedly worrying about the figures shown by international organizations: for example WHO establishes a prevalence of physical abuse that would affect between 25 and 50% of the child population. Obviously emotional abuse and neglect are more difficult to quantify, although they occur and also affect children.
