The Biodiversity Museum in Ibi (Alicante), an interesting visit with the kids

Workshop for children - Biodiversity Museum

I already told you when talking about the Toy Hotel that the town of Ibi (Alicante) had places of interest to visit with the children. The Ibi Biodiversity Museum It's a good example. It is a small museum created with the intention of raising public awareness of the importance of our daily activities in environmental conservation.

Children are surprised with this very enjoyable tour, which teaches them curiosities like birds smaller than an insect and multicolored butterflies, in which they can look through microscopes, see animal skins, habitat reproductions ...

There are currently two permanent exhibitions of different themes but with the same purpose. The first is "Biodiversity threatened, illegal trafficking and introduction of species". It shows through videos, posters, showcases and interactive games the magnitude of the problem of illegal trafficking of species and the consequences of this activity for the conservation of biodiversity.

We see a series of photographs and information panels on the extinctions of animals and man as a cause of extinction, illegal trafficking of species and the introduction of species. Here we learn how the loss of biodiversity has accelerated in recent years due to some actions by people.

Highlights the great skin of polar bear and other wild animals, or objects that can be made with crocodile skin, snake skin or ivory ... Children are very surprised to know the history of these animals and how, even if they are protected, there are people who skip the law to earn money, making damage to the environment

With another taste in the mouth we see the collection of insects, with a large number of species of beetles and lepidoptera.

The richness of the biodiversity that surrounds us

On the other hand we have the exhibition "Mediterranean Biodiversity", focused on the Mediterranean ecosystems, recreating on a diverse scale environments of this environment. There are three large central showcases, dedicated to the Mediterranean Forest, to Wetlands and Coastal Areas and finally to Cereal Crops, showcases in which you can contemplate the most representative fauna and flora of these environments.

We have collections of plants and animals perfectly identified and integrated into the habitats where they live, with very interesting reproductions and in detail for the kids. Eagles, turtles, vultures, weasels, herons, ducks, sparrows ... are some of the animals that make up the rich fauna of our environment, which must be protected and rarely repaired.

We continue through an area dedicated to the Traditional Uses of Biodiversity where we can find traditional cereal crops, weeds, fibers and traditional basketry, or useful insects and medicinal and aromatic plants.

At the beginning of the walk through the Museum there is a small projection room where you can see an explanatory video, although in our visit we did not have the opportunity to see it and the children immediately went to look out the windows with so many new and interesting things.

If you want to check it with your children, you can do it from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 7 pm; Sundays and holidays from 11 to 14 hours. Children under seven are free, and on Sundays admission is free for everyone. Normal adult admission is 3 euros.

By the way, the museum is located in a historic building, the old Payá tin toy factory, and next to it is the Toy Museum, a project that has suffered many ups and downs and we hope to see it open one day.

In the Ibi Biodiversity Museum they are organized periodically workshops for children and thematic conferences, one more excuse to approach him and learn as a family about the importance of respect for nature.
