Russian roulette of car travel for children: go without the retention system

A gesture as simple as secure the child in the child restraint system considerably reduces the chances of serious injury in the event of an accident. Specifically, that risk is multiplied by five if the child is not insured in the seat correctly.

On the occasion of the return to school (and work, and roads ...) the General Directorate of Traffic has launched a campaign until September 16 that alerts and wants to raise awareness about this issue. It tells us that for children the use of SRI is "the best life insurance".

According to the balance of the “Operation Summer” of the DGT, half of the children under 12 died in July and August did not travel with the child restraint system. We have already seen on other occasions how the majority of children killed in a traffic accident are not subject to the SRI.

The campaign is part of the annual calendar of actions carried out by Traffic for improve road safety in specific aspects such as motorcycle control, alcohol consumption or school transport.

During this week, the agents will increase the controls, verifying that both the driver and the passengers are properly fastened the seat belt and that the children travel with the restraint systems appropriate to their size, weight and age.

Remember that it is essential to use safety seats, even on short journeys, but not just any seat, but appropriate for the child, according to the different groups. In addition, when going to school children have to take off their backpack, because carrying it while leaving in the SRI is dangerous.

Coinciding with the increase in the number of children traveling to and from school, the DGT appeals to the parental responsibility to take children in the appropriate chairs and properly placed and fastened.
