Disregard for dyslexia and difficulties in detecting it in school

In my relatively short experience as a teacher I have encountered several cases of childhood dyslexia to a greater or lesser degree. Even one of those cases was not previously detected, and I speak of a 12-year-old boy.

But dyslexia it can and should be detected at earlier ages For a correct performance. This learning disorder goes unnoticed in many schools, although it can reach almost 10% of the population.

And while in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, the school system has an early detection of dyslexia, in many other places, such as Spain, the attention that should be paid.

The biggest danger is that if this dysfunction is not taken care of early, it can be confused with other problems that have nothing to do with ignorance, laziness, delay ... And, worse, lead children to school failure if not They find the necessary support. Conversely, before a correct diagnosis, dyslexia is treated and eventually overcome.

Personages as relevant as Einstein and Pablo Picasso were dyslexic, as well as the powerful Bill Gates or the television Boris Izaguirre. They are only the most visible face. The Spanish Federation of Dyslexics (FEDIS) states that if the estimate in Europe is about 38 million dyslexic citizens, between 10% and 15% of Spaniards I would suffer to some degree this dysfunction.

The worst part is that most do not even know they have dyslexia. And, although the boy or girl with dyslexia has no delay, they need special attention, at home and at school.

Unfortunately today many centers lack trained professionals to detect cases of dyslexia, so a solution "from above" is imposed, which trains these professionals.

A solution that should also invest economically in providing centers with some adapted materials to correctly treat these cases of dyslexia.

As we can see, to reach a solution there is a long way to go as a training, knowledge, materials ... And above all to become aware that it is not a minority problem, as strange or as difficult to overcome as you think.
