Alcohol in pregnancy, moderate consumption or not a drop?

In the United Kingdom a controversy arose over cwhat is the limit amount of alcohol that can be consumed during pregnancy. It is an issue that extends to all women who are waiting for a baby who wants to know if they can drink a glass every now and then or better on the contrary or wet their lips.

Until recently in that country a low or moderate consumption was allowed (my gynecologist in Spain also did not forbid me as long as I did not exceed a glass), however lately the recommendation of low or moderate consumption became (at least in the United Kingdom) in total ban.

Opinions among experts have been divided. For some, the total ban is a “paternalistic” and easy-going measure, since it is safer to advise that it be completely suppressed even when there is no reliable evidence that moderate alcohol consumption (one or two glasses per week) has long-term adverse effects.

On the other hand, there are those who believe that precisely because there is no conclusive evidence, it is better to prevent possible damage to the fetus and avoid drinking alcohol, since experiments with animals suggest that even small amounts can cause irreversible damage to the fetus, especially in certain critical periods .

In the blog we have talked many times about alcohol in pregnancy and we propose the recommendation not to drink a drop as it is very difficult to put a generalized limit measure. There are women in whose organism the effect of half a glass of wine can be very harmful while in others it is not.

Without going any further, in a study I have commented on, it indicated that alcohol consumption during pregnancy, even when it is a moderate consumption (we do not know exactly how many weekly glasses they call moderate) is the most frequent cause of mental retardation in the baby

We always clarify that it is better to consult with your doctor, however the last decision is of the pregnant woman that the more informed she is, the better (and for that we are).
