The doses of folic acid and iron given to pregnant women are excessive

If you are pregnant or have been a mother, you will have received the medical recommendation of taking folic acid and iron, both with the diet and with drugs if the specialist considers that it is necessary for a better development of your baby.

Well, a study that Professor Fernando Viteri has been carrying out for 20 years and that he has announced at the conference “Metabolism of iron and folic acid in pregnant women” carried out at the Hospital Casa de Salud de Valencia, suggests that “the doses of folic acid and iron given to pregnant women are excessive”.

According to the expert, these substances are administered when the effectiveness time has passed, since they are taken too late to offer their preventive action. It also states that the doses administered are not adequate and may have consequences on the functioning of the intestinal mucosa.

This type of news is what worries and disorients future parents, we hope they will elaborate a study that can reaffirm or deny these statements that seems to be meaningful, because we personally think that the prescription of iron and folic acid should be personal and not the same for all the women.
