How to recognize dehydration

Young children dehydrate faster than adults, since the percentage of water in their body is higher (around 80%) and their balance is much weaker.

Do not worry that although children lose water more easily, for example, by sweating a lot they will not suffer from dehydration.

Only in the case of a picture of diarrhea and continued vomiting can a large loss of water be caused that is not replenished. Therefore, in this case it is very important that you drink a lot of liquid.

There are some very easy signs to recognize in a baby suffering from dehydration, as:

  • Cases of mild dehydration are checked by weighing the baby, who suffers a loss of about 5% of his weight.

  • The fontanelles, the soft areas of the baby's skull, are sunk.

  • He urinates little, much less than he usually urinates and the urine is darker in color. You can spend several hours without peeing.

  • Dry and hard bowel movements are a symptom of lack of water.

  • Mouth with dry lips and tongue, eyes and dry skin. When the skin is clamped between the fingers it does not return to its original form.

  • The baby may be less active than usual, sleepy and apathetic.

  • The skin tone becomes pale, it can even turn grayish.

If you notice that your baby has any of these symptoms of fluid loss, you should see a doctor immediately.
