Castilla y León will allow mixed bathrooms in schools to favor the inclusion of transsexual students

Integrating children in a situation of transsexuality is the objective of a new protocol that could be implemented experimentally in some schools in Castilla y León during the first quarter of next year.

This is collected in the "Protocol of educational attention and support to students in situations of transsexuality and students with non-normative gender expression" designed by the Ministry of Education, which includes measures for inclusion of approximately twenty transsexual minors (of which it has proof): allow mixed bathrooms and guarantee freedom so that they dress as they feel more comfortable depending on your sexual identity, even if you wear a uniform in the center.

Avoid discrimination against transgender children

It is intended like this remove gender identity barriers that transgender children face when going to the bathroom or dressing in a certain way.

It is a step for the inclusion of these students who may feel discriminated against if they are forced to wear a skirt or pants, in the case of wearing a uniform, and are not comfortable with it, or have to find themselves in the discomfort of choosing between entering the Sanitary for girls or boys. Having mixed bathrooms, I wouldn't have to.

Removing the signage of a specific gender from the bathroom door ensures that they can be used by any student, regardless of their gender identity. The school is a very important area for the integration of transgender children, it is there that they share a large part of the day with their classmates and it is essential that they feel clothed.

An action protocol

The document states that if a child or his family expresses his situation to the school, or is detected by the teachers, a series of measures will be put in place to ensure respect for his identity and / or gender expression.

Among them, that both educators and the rest of students call him by the chosen name according to their sexual identity, as well as communicating the child's condition to the class and preparing their reception to facilitate their integration.

A necessary debate

The idea does not please everyone equally. On the one hand, there are those who consider it a necessary step to favor the integration of transsexual children in the school environment and prevent the bullying that these children often suffer, on the other who do not see it appropriate for boys and girls to share the same bathroom.

For now, Castilla y León plans to do an experimental test during the first quarter of the next course in public and concerted schools. After it, they will draw the appropriate conclusions to make the necessary modifications before implementing it definitively. What do you think of the measure? Do you see that it is necessary to extend to all schools?
