Three Texas schools impose physical punishment by striking wooden shovels at students who disobey

Three schools in the Three Rivers district of Texas, in the United States, have decided introduce physical punishment to students that demonstrate bad behavior, according to The Independent newspaper.

In these schools, where students from four to 18 years of age study, they will be allowed use a wooden pallet to hit those who disobey or do not behave according to the regulations of the center.

Physical punishment if the parents authorize it

Mary Springs, director of the Three Rivers Independent School District, says physical punishment will only apply. "if the student's parent agrees with it", and as another method of correction and education.

Andrew Amaro, school behavior coordinator, proposed the measure in the hope that it will be a effective deterrent for students with bad behaviorthat disobey teachers or violate the rules of the classroom and school.

"When I was a student I knew that if I got into trouble with a teacher or was disrespectful, I would be beaten by the principal" - says Amaro trying to explain his controversial method.

Violating students will be hit with a wooden paddle (one hit for each offense committed) by authorized personnel, who will be exclusively the behavior coordinators and the directors.

This policy, which it was approved unanimously in the three schools, will be established for the moment as a provisional measure until it really works:

"We are going to analyze the lack of discipline of this year with respect to the past and the times in which the corporal punishment has been applied" - explains the director Springs - "If we see that the number of faults is reduced during the course, it will be a sign that this policy is working well "

A terrible step back in schools

The National Association of School Psychologists of the United States defines school corporal punishment as "the intentional infliction of pain or discomfort through the use of physical force on a student, with the intention of causing bodily pain to correct or punish their behavior"

In 2016, the then Secretary of Education of the United States, John B King Jr., wrote to state leaders asking them to ban corporal punishment in schools, following an investigation that revealed that 110,000 American schoolchildren suffered every year.

"Our schools are required to safeguard the well-being, safety and extraordinary potential of children and young people" - said King then

"Although there are those who argue that corporal punishment is something that some school communities did in the past, society has evolved and we cannot justify or repeat these actions"

"In the short term, physical punishment makes students aggressive and challenging, and in the long term they are more likely to suffer from mental health and substance abuse problems."

"No school can be considered safe if its students fear being physically punished. We urge states to eliminate the use of corporal punishment in schools, a practice that educators, civil rights defenders, medical professionals and researchers agree on. which is harmful to students "

The truth is that read that More than 100,000 American students suffer physical punishment annually in their schools, has put my hair on end. And not only because experts repeat to satiety that they are not educational methods and seriously damage the personality of children, but because hitting a child is a crime.

And although there are people, groups or institutions that still continue to defend physical punishment and authoritarianism as parenting methods, there are already many countries that are beginning to ban it and legislate against it.

Luckily there are other schools that are true examples of how to treat and educate their students, so we hope and wish that these obsolete and so harmful methods cease to be carried out as soon as possible and we are aware of the irreparable damage they can cause children.
