"Understanding the past. Planning the future": motto of the World Breastfeeding Week 2012

WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding) has announced the motto of the World Breastfeeding Week 2012, which will be: "Understanding the past. Planning the future", as a way of taking stock of the path traveled and the one that remains to be traveled.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated between August 1 and 7 in more than 170 countries, and is intended to promote breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

This year's is the twentieth edition of the SMLM and also celebrates the 10 years of the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Nutrition promoted by WHO / UNICEF, a guide on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months and the fundamental role played by the correct feeding practices to achieve an optimal state of health.

The objectives of the World Breastfeeding Week for 2012 They are:

  • Remember what has happened in the last 20 years of breastfeeding support
  • Celebrate the successes and achievements of the support movement for nursing mothers
  • Evaluate the implementation status of the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding.
  • Call for action to close the gaps in policies and programs on breastfeeding / infant and young child feeding (ALNP)
  • Call public attention to the status of policies and programs on breastfeeding and feeding of infants and young children
  • Show national work worldwide

The World Week marks the Innocenti Declaration, formulated by senior WHO and UNICEF officials in August 1990 in order to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
