The first baby in Spain is born without alloimmune neonatal thrombopenia

I bring you new hopeful news for parents who can transmit to their children hereditary diseases, which adds to what I have previously published. In this case it is noteworthy that he was born the first baby in Spain without the complications of neonatal alloimmune thrombopenia, a very serious disease.

He was born in Valencia. The couple, after deciding to be parents for the second time, came to ask for help from the assisted reproduction unit of the Quirón Hospital in Valencia, and were offered the possibility of fertilization with the semen of a previously selected donor.

It was necessary to determine the platelet genotype in a donor that was compatible with that of the mother to avoid fetal complications. The difficulty was great, since it was estimated that only 3% of the population was adequate.

After pregnancy, the baby was born at the beginning of December, completely healthy and through natural birth.

In the neonatal alloimmune thrombopenia Fetal platelets are destroyed by an antibody present in the mother. These children have a 30% chance of suffering brain hemorrhages and mortality is 10% of cases, leaving 20% of them with irreversible brain injuries.

In addition, there are great chances that the problem will be repeated in the following children. This Valencian family has been able to give life to their second child with the security of avoiding this risk.

Now, thanks to assisted reproduction, it is possible to prevent the repetition of the serious problem that is the neonatal alloimmune thrombopenia.
