Babies remember but forget faster

As much as I tried, I couldn't remember anything from my first years of life and yesterday I saw a story that precisely commented that adults are very rare to remember something from their early childhood, before the preschool stage.

However, that does not mean that babies have no memories, only that they forget them faster.

This topic was recently discussed at the annual meeting in San Francisco of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Numerous studies have been conducted in relation to the ability of babies to remember and until recently it was thought that babies had no memories, however according to one of the panelists who participated in the meeting, recent studies show otherwise.

According to Lisa M. Oakes of the University of California at Davis:

“Although memory development varies among infants, all babies are extremely intelligent. Infants have a great capacity to extract information from their environment. ”

According to Patricia J. Bauer, of Duke University:

“The ability to form memories depends on a network of structures in the brain and those develop at different times. By joining these structures between six and 18 months of life, there is an increase in the ability to form short and long term memories. ”

So babies do have memories, only they forget them much faster than adults.
